Muggers Bridge is on Manchester St in Oldham: it span’s a busy
dual carriageway. It was built at great expense by our fearless
leaders, apparently to keep the muggers off the streets-and I
must say it was doing a good job in the first four weeks after
it opened, about fifteen years ago. But sadly no pedestrians seemed
to be using it any more and our poor fearless leaders were left
scratching there heads wondering were it all went wrong, after
paying consultants a wagon load of cash to come up with a
cunning plan to stop pedestrians dicing with death by crossing
the busy dual carriageway thus avoiding the muggers. The
consultants said the solution was to build a fence at the side
of the road so the pedestrians had to use the bridge: that way
the muggings could restart. Unfortunately for our fearless
leaders the pedestrians were not having any of that, so now not
only have the poor pedestrians to risk death by crossing
the busy dual carriageway they also have a very good chance of
impaling themselves on the fence at the side of the road.
